TRENTON, NJ  – September 6, 2020 - The Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) is excited to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Garden State Soccer League (GSSL) in which the GSSL will now be a feeder league of the EPSL.

The GSSL was formed in 1980 and, with approximately 100 teams, is the largest US Soccer affiliated adult soccer league in New Jersey. GSSL teams regularly compete in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and the National Amateur Cup. GSSL teams have also won seven of the last eight New Jersey State Open Cups. Since its founding, a total of 27,581 players have been registered with the GSSL. Visit https://gsslsoccer.com/ to learn more about the GSSL.

This agreement establishes promotion and relegation between the EPSL and GSSL and allows the champion of the GSSL to enter into a playoff with the champion of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL) for a promotion spot in the Metropolitan Conference of the EPSL.

GSSL League President Pat Varsallona said, “since 1980 the GSSL has been the home to elite amateur soccer in New Jersey. The GSSL is pleased to partner as a feeder league with the EPSL which gives our clubs a higher league to aspire to and reinforces that the GSSL is where all NJ elite amateur clubs should want to play for opportunity to promote to EPSL, to get the best competition, and to have eligibility to compete in all NJ State, Region I, USASA, and USSF Cups.”

EPSL Treasurer and CSL President Mike Fitzgerald  said “we are thrilled to add the GSSL to the EPSL family. The joining of forces of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League, Maryland Major Soccer League, Garden State Soccer League, and leagues to come demonstrates that there is an appetite for the EPSL model of being a non-profit, with transparent governance, low cost, and an open league entry based on sporting merit.”

About the Eastern Premier Soccer League

Formed in 2020, the EPSL is a 501(c) non-profit corporation, which is owned by the member clubs and the feeder leagues. Unlike other national and regional leagues, the clubs and feeder leagues will participate in governance including the establishing of fees, prize money, and schedule in order to keep costs down and minimize travel. The EPSL is looking to establish agreements with other local leagues as either a promotion/relegation feeder league or through a cooperative league agreement to preserve and maintain the relevancy of elite local leagues by marketing as members of the EPSL. Through either pro/rel or this association of leagues, local leagues can collectively market themselves as entry points to higher level playing opportunities and leagues of choice for competitive amateur soccer.

In July of 2020 EPSL reached historical feeder league agreements with two elite amateur soccer leagues in the Cosmopolitan Soccer League (CSL) in the New York metropolitan area and the Baltimore, MD/Washington, DC based Maryland Major Soccer League (MMSL) to establish the first regional based multi-league promotion and relegation system in the United States. With the addition of the Garden State Soccer League, the EPSL now has feeder leagues in three states and has teams that have been US Open Cup and National Amateur champions as well as other top amateur teams in the United States so reaching agreements with these elite leagues is an exciting milestone in the history of US Soccer.

The EPSL will continue to make announcements on what clubs will complete in its inaugural season in the coming weeks and months. Due of course to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, actual return to play will be dictated by guidance from federal, state, and local health officials along with applicable soccer governing bodies.

EPSL clubs will be affiliated with the US Soccer Federation (USSF) and the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA), through their state associations and, as such, will be eligible to participate in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying rounds, the US National Amateur Cup and state and regional cup competitions.
